Warming Winter Green Smoothie

So far we are having a very wet, cold and dreary winter in Southern Australia. I know my friends and family in the UK are having similar weather and its supposed to be summer!

This smoothie is very warming and not for the faint hearted! I love it but my hubby finds a bit too hot. You can always reduce the ginger and cardamom in this instance.

2 bananas, halved
2 pears, cored and quartered
1.5 cups of water and 1-2 Tbs of hemp or sunflower seeds, or 1.5 cups of almond milk
2-3cm piece of ginger, halved
1/2 tsp ground cardamom
1 tsp vanilla extract
1-2 handfuls of leafy greens - amount as tolerated

Blend for 1-2 minutes and serve for two

Yum! Yes I'm from the UK (Scotland) and we've had such awful wet weather all year, so I can totally relate. It's hard to eat more fruit when it's so cold in summer.

This smoothie looks amazing. What a great idea to put warming spices in your food to warm yourself up. I made a chili and lime chocolate smoothie which hit the spot and I love ginger in smoothies too.

I add oats to all my green smoothies which makes them stodgier, filling and creamy. Perfect for winter and cold weather as they are warming and hearty.

Hi Katherine, I can't digest oats, but I wish I could as they make a great addition to smoothies! How good is ginger, and I love the sound of your chilli chocolate smoothie, are you happy to share the recipe?

Cheers Kristine

Ah sorry. That's a shame. All my smoothies so far include oats but I am about to start including different types of carbs in my smoothies. Do you eat any other carbs? I had flaked quinoa in my smoothie yesterday and I couldn't tell at all. It just makes it much more filling. In an ideal world I'd try and get away from eating grains altogether but it's a faster way to get full when you don't have much time on your hands.

I too am trying to limit grains generally, even gluten free ones, however I don't feel the need to put them in my green smoothies. My carb component in them is the fruit and I make them filling by the volume consumed (at least 1/2 a litre) and I will often add a protein/fat element to them such as using almond milk, hemp seeds, sun-warrior protein powder or even a raw egg. The greenery also adds to the satiation factor.

Yes that makes sense. I also drink at least half a litre per day but I never found a green smoothie on it's own filling enough even with added seeds. I guess I must just have more calories first thing in the morning to get me through the day. We're all different. A lot of people can't eat so much in the morning. I've always woken up ready for a hearty breakfast!

Treats do not have to be expensive or unhealthy to be good! These fruit shakes can be eaten for breakfast, snack or a refreshing dessert. They can be tailored to any dietary needs and take just minutes to make.
